The idea

A circle of light in the middle of the night

One night the lights went out and never came back. With the dark came the Shadows, who fear light and devour it. You are the lamplighter: you carry the last light and relight the beacons along the way so people can come back.

Light is everything

Your lamp's charge is your health, what you can see, the reach of your weapons and the time you have left.

One finger, three seconds

Move with your thumb; shooting is automatic. You get it before reading a thing.

Every run leaves something lit

Even if you lose, something is better: a beacon lit on the map, someone new in town.

Hope, not grey

It's the end of the world, but the tone is rebuilding: warm light against the night, no blood.

The story

Whose voice is on the radio?

Your grandmother Amparo kept the lighthouse on the coast. On the night of the Blackout, only her lamp stayed lit: she put it in your hands and went alone to the city. Ever since, through the radio static, a voice keeps saying “there is light here.” You will relight the beacons until you find her.

The lamp
An old radio crackling with static; through the window, a distant tower with a tiny light.
The voice on the radio

Grandma's notes

Every stretch of road hides one of her notes. It glows in the dark: pick it up as you pass.

The radio

When you relight the last beacon of a zone, the voice from the tower says something new.

The neighbors know something

With every beacon, the people in town tell you what they saw come through.

It never stops the game

A few panels at the start, which you can skip, and everything kept in your logbook to read anytime.

How to play

Reach the next beacon and light it

The first night comes with a guide that teaches you as you play, one tip at a time.

Walk

Drag your finger anywhere on the screen. Let go and you stop.

Mind your lamp

It drains over time and with every hit. Batteries recharge it.

Auto-fire

Your spark gun fires at the nearest Shadow… but only at the ones you can light.

Light the beacon

Stand in its circle and defend it while it lights up. It stays lit for good.

The Shadows

Silhouettes with glowing eyes

In the dark you only see their eyes, and each one has its own color. When they fall apart they turn into sparks and drop embers: that's how you level up.

  • The moth: a dark winged silhouette.

    Moth

Flies straight at your light. One is no threat; a swarm is.

  • The stalker: a low, spiky four-legged beast.

    Stalker

Circles just outside your light and pounces when your lamp runs low. You hear it growl first.

  • The light-eater: a wide mass with its mouth open.

    Light-eater

Slow and huge. While it's inside your light, it swallows it: take that one down first.

  • A guardian: big, hunched and horned.

    The guardians

One per zone, each with its own eyes: orange on the coast, blue at the dam and magenta in the city. They aren't after you: they're after the beacon you're lighting.

The journey

Ten beacons, three zones

Each run is one leg of the journey. What you light stays lit.

  • The coast: the old highway, the street market and the climb to the antennas, among collapsed houses with their doors and exposed bricks.
  • The dam: the dry canal, the dam wall with its gates and the machine house: stained concrete walls with rusty rebar.
  • The darkened city: the avenue, the market, the underpass and the radio tower, between buildings with broken windows. Each zone is harder than the last and ends with its guardian.
  • Each zone's night: your lamp casts shadows, walls light up on the side facing it, and every zone has its own air: sea breeze and mist on the coast, damp at the dam, ash and sodium light in the city.
  • The beacon map: it lights up with every beacon you relight.
  • The town: every beacon brings someone back (meet them).
  • Daily challenge: the same leg of the coast, the same Shadows and a modifier for everyone that day. Your record is how fast you light the beacon.
  • Options for everyone: brighter night, reduced flashing and vibration.

Progress

In development

Lumbre is already playable from start to finish: ten beacons in three zones. We're making it the same way as Rail Critters: step by step, with tests on every change. The art and design are by Romina López, and the sound effects and music are made in the studio too.

  • Done: banded lighting, four Shadows and three guardians, ten beacons across the coast, the dam and the city, the town with five neighbours, the daily challenge, the first-night guide, accessibility options and the shop.
  • New this round: it has a story now: your grandmother Amparo, the coast lighthouse and a voice on the radio, with panels at the start, her notes left along every stretch of road and neighbours who know something. The art looks sharper: the lamplighter and the Shadows with twice the detail, and everything that glows has a soft halo. And on Android you can back up your progress with a code to move it to another phone.
  • Next: the closed test on Google Play has started; then the public release. Google Play Games achievements come in an update.
  • Release: no date yet. We'll announce it here.

Want to know when it's out?

We'll announce it on this page and in our devlog. If you're press, the Lumbre, la última luz press kit is already available.
